Controls

Keyboard

  • ← ↑ → ↓ pick a piece, then move the one you lift
  • Space or Enter lift and drop
  • Z turns the piece you are holding, or flips it
  • R or E turn, Q turn back, F flip
  • H hint, Backspace back to the tray, M swap today / practice, P pause

Touch

  • Drag a piece from the tray into the shape
  • Tap a piece to turn it 45 degrees
  • TURN, FLIP and HINT sit under the tray

Controller

  • D-pad or left stick to move
  • A / Cross for action, B / Circle for secondary
  • Start to pause

Tips for a better score

  • Place the two large triangles first. They fill half the figure between them, so the rest follows quickly once they are right.
  • The parallelogram is the only piece that cannot be turned into its mirror image, so if a slot looks impossible, try Flip on it.
  • Drop a piece near where you want it, not exactly: it snaps to the nearest corner it can sit on, and the dotted outline shows where that is.
  • Scoring: 300 for the solve, a point for every second under four minutes, ten a puzzle up the ladder, a hundred extra for today's figure, and fifty off for each hint.

About Tangram

Tangram is the seven-piece shape puzzle: two large triangles, a medium one, two small ones, a square and a parallelogram. Drag every piece into the ink silhouette, turning them in 45 degree steps and flipping them over, until the whole shape is covered with nothing overlapping and nothing left in the tray. Pieces snap into place with plenty of room for a thumb, and a dotted outline shows where the one you are holding will land. Every figure is made by laying the seven real pieces down edge to edge, so each one can be solved, and the answer is kept beside it for the hint. There is today's figure, the same for everyone until midnight, and a practice ladder of ten drawn figures, from a house to the classic diamond, then endless ones grown from a seed.
