What's in the puzzle shelf

These are the games for a quiet ten minutes: no timer pressure unless the game says so, no levels to unlock, no ads between rounds. Several of them have a difficulty that climbs as you solve, so they stay interesting well past the first sitting.

Start with Block Drop, Grid 2048, Mine Sweep, Match Pairs, Gem Rush, Lights Off.

Do I need to download or install anything?

No. Every game on RetroWorld is drawn and sounded in code inside the page, so opening the game page is the whole install. There is no plugin, no app store, and nothing to update.

Do these work on a phone?

Yes. Every game has touch controls — a swipe, a tap, a drag or an on-screen pad, whichever suits it — and the screen fills the phone when you press Play. Games that need a wide view rotate; the rest stay upright.

Do I need an account, and are my scores saved?

There is no account and no sign-up. Your best score for each game is stored by your own browser on your own device, which also means it stays behind if you switch phone or clear your browser data.

Are these copies of games I already know?

No. Every game here was written for RetroWorld with its own name, its own art and its own synthesised sound. Some share a genre with games you have played — that is the point of a genre — but none of them use anyone else's characters, sprites, music or branding.
