How to play

  1. Tap a cell to go blank, orange, teal, blank again.
  2. No three alike next to each other in a row or a column.
  3. Every row and column is half orange, half teal.
  4. No two rows, and no two columns, may be identical.
  5. Check marks any rule you are breaking; Hint places one right disc and says why.

Controls

Keyboard

  • ← ↑ → ↓ move
  • Space or Enter cycle the cell
  • 1 orange, 2 teal, 0 clear
  • Z undo, E check, H hint
  • M swap today / practice, P pause

Touch

  • Tap a cell to cycle blank, orange, teal
  • Hold a cell, or right-click it, to cycle backwards
  • UNDO, CHECK and HINT sit under the grid

Controller

  • D-pad or left stick to move
  • A / Cross for action, B / Circle for secondary
  • Start to pause

Tips for a better score

  • Look for two alike side by side first: the cells either side of them must be the other kind. Two alike with one gap between them works the same way for the middle cell.
  • Count as you go. Once a line holds half of one kind, every cell left in it is the other kind.
  • Near the end of a line, try each way of finishing it in your head: if all but one would put three alike together or copy a finished line, the last one is the answer.
  • Scoring: five points the first time each row or column is complete and legal, five a cell for the solve, two a second under par, and a hundred extra for today's grid. Check costs 20 and a hint 30.

About Binary Grid

Binary Grid is a logic puzzle played with two kinds of disc. Fill every cell with orange or teal so that no three alike sit together in a row or a column, every row and column holds exactly as many of one as of the other, and no two rows, or two columns, are the same. Some discs are given to start you off. Orange discs carry a dot and teal discs a bar, so the grid reads just as well if you cannot tell the colours apart. Every grid is built in your browser and checked by a solver that only uses plain deduction, so each one has exactly one answer and never needs a guess. There is today's 8 by 8 grid, the same for everyone until midnight, and a practice ladder that climbs from 6 by 6 to 12 by 12.
