Something not working in Cage Sums?
Scores can't be saved in this browser (private mode?). Play on.
How to play
- Pick a cell, then write a digit from 1 to the grid's size.
- No digit twice in a row or a column.
- Each cage's digits must make its target with its sum: + − × or ÷.
- A right cage turns teal with a tick; a wrong one orange with a cross.
- Hint writes one right digit and says why.
Controls
Keyboard
- ← ↑ → ↓ move
- 1–9 write a digit, 0 or Backspace clears
- Space or Enter raises the digit by one
- N notes, Z undo, H hint
- M swap today / practice, P pause
Touch
- Tap a cell, then tap a digit on the keypad below the grid
- NOTES pencils candidates; CLEAR, UNDO and HINT sit beside it
Controller
- D-pad or left stick to move
- A / Cross for action, B / Circle for secondary
- Start to pause
Tips for a better score
- Start with the one-cell cages, then the tight ones: a two-cell 3+ can only be 1 and 2, and a 2÷ in a 4 by 4 is 1 and 2 or 2 and 4.
- Once a row or column has all but one digit, the last cell is forced. Watch for a digit that fits in only one place along a line.
- Notes pencil small candidates into a cell; on the bigger grids they show as dots, and the digits are listed under the grid.
- Scoring: two points a cell the first time each cage comes right, five a cell for the solve, two a second under par, and a hundred extra for today's puzzle. A hint costs 30.
About Cage Sums
Cage Sums is a number grid with arithmetic in it. Fill the grid with the digits 1 to N so that no digit appears twice in any row or column. The grid is cut into cages outlined in dotted orange, and each cage carries a target and a sum: 7+ means its digits add up to seven, 2− that two digits differ by two, 12× that they multiply to twelve, and 2÷ that one divides the other to make two. A cage that is full and right fills faintly teal and gets a tick; one that misses turns orange with a cross, and a digit repeated in a line is underlined. Every puzzle is built in your browser and checked twice before you see it: a counter that tries every possibility must find exactly one answer, and a solver that never guesses must finish it. There is today's 6 by 6 puzzle, the same for everyone until midnight, and a practice ladder that climbs from a gentle 4 by 4 with only adding and subtracting up to 9 by 9.
