Tips for a better score
- Start at the ends of a chain of signs. A cell that is smaller than its neighbour can never hold the largest digit, and a cell that is larger can never hold a 1.
- Follow chains: three cells in a row each smaller than the next need at least 1, 2 and 3 of room, so the last one is at least 3 and the first at most the size minus 2.
- Use notes. Write the digits a cell could still be, then strike them out as rows, columns and signs fill in.
- Scoring: five points the first time each row or column is complete and correct, five a cell for the solve, two a second under par, and a hundred extra for today's grid. A hint costs 30.
About Inequality Grid
Inequality Grid is a number logic puzzle on a square grid from 4 by 4 up to 7 by 7. Fill every cell so each row and each column holds every digit from 1 up to the size of the grid exactly once. Small arrow signs sit between some neighbouring cells, and the point of each sign faces the smaller of the two digits. A digit or two may be given to start you off, but most of the work is done by the signs. Signs turn teal when the digits either side agree with them, and a broken sign is struck through, so mistakes read without relying on colour. Every grid is built in your browser and checked twice: a solver that only uses plain deduction must finish it, and an exhaustive search must find exactly one answer, so no grid ever needs a guess. There is today's grid, between 5 by 5 and 7 by 7 and the same for everyone until midnight, and a practice ladder that climbs from 4 by 4 to 7 by 7.
