How to play
- Drag a box from one square to another to mark out a plot.
- Every plot is a rectangle holding exactly one number.
- That number is the plot's area: how many squares it covers.
- Cover the whole field. Tap a plot to lift it; a new box over old plots replaces them.
- Switch between today's field and practice with the tabs at the top; the size key changes the practice field.
Controls
Keyboard
- ← ↑ → ↓ move
- Space or Enter drops a corner, arrows stretch the box, Space again marks the plot
- Space twice on a plot lifts it; Backspace lifts the plot under the cursor
- Z undo (or let go of a corner), H hint
- M swap today and practice, 3 practice size, P pause
Touch
- Drag a box out from a number to mark its plot
- Tap a plot to lift it
- UNDO, CLEAR and HINT sit under the field
Controller
- D-pad or left stick to move
- A / Cross for action, B / Circle for secondary
- Start to pause
Tips for a better score
- Start with numbers that can only fit one way: a big number pressed into a corner, or a 2 hemmed in by other numbers.
- Look for a square that only one number's plot could ever reach. That number has to take it.
- When every way of fitting a number covers the same squares, no other plot can use them.
- A prime number such as 5 or 7 can only be a straight strip, which rules out a lot at once.
- Scoring: a plot's area the first time each number is fitted, then three a square for the whole field and a bonus for finishing under par. Hints cost twenty; undo is free.
About Allotments
Allotments is a calm pen-and-paper logic puzzle about dividing a field. Numbers sit in some of its squares. Mark the whole field out into rectangular plots so that every plot holds exactly one number, and that number is how many squares the plot covers. A 6 might be a strip of six or a block of two by three; the numbers around it decide which. Drag a box out from a number and it snaps to the squares, tinted in its own colour when it fits and hatched when it breaks the rule, so right and wrong read by pattern as well as colour. Every field is built in your browser and finished by a solver that only uses forced steps, then counted again by an exact search, so each one has exactly one answer and never needs a guess. There is today's 8 by 8 field, the same for everyone until midnight, and endless practice in four sizes: 5 by 5, 7 by 7, 9 by 9 and a tall 9 by 12.
