How to play

  1. Tap letters on the wheel, or drag across them, to spell a word. Lifting your finger after a drag enters it.
  2. Every word needs four letters or more and must use the orange centre letter.
  3. Each tile can be used once in a word. Find the word that uses all nine.
  4. Reach Good, Great or Every Word on the bar, then press Finish twice to bank your score.
  5. Tap the list of found words to see all of them.

Controls

Keyboard

  • A–Z type letters, Backspace delete, Delete clear
  • Enter enter the word; Enter on an empty word twice finishes
  • Space shuffle, Tab show every word found
  • ← → ↑ ↓ ring a tile or button, then Space picks it
  • 1 daily, 2 practice, Esc pause

Touch

  • Tap letters on the wheel, then ENTER, or drag across them and let go
  • Tap the last letter again to take it back; CLEAR empties the word
  • Tap DAILY at the top to switch to practice before your first word

Controller

  • D-pad or left stick to move
  • A / Cross for action, B / Circle for secondary
  • Start to pause

Tips for a better score

  • Look for endings first: -ING, -ER, -ED and -S turn one word into several, as long as the centre letter is in them.
  • Shuffle spins the outer letters into a new order. A fresh arrangement often shows you a word you had been looking straight past.
  • Words pay 10 for four letters, 15 for five, 25 for six, 35 for seven and 50 for eight. The nine-letter word pays 150.
  • Finishing at Good adds 50, at Great 150, and with every everyday word 300. The daily adds 25 a day for a live streak, up to 250.
  • Rare words, marked with a hollow diamond, score half but do not count toward Good or Great.

About Nine Spokes

Nine Spokes is the old newspaper word wheel, turned in teak. Nine letters sit on the wheel, one of them in the orange centre. Make as many words of four letters or more as you can, every one using the centre letter and each tile no more than once, and hunt for the single word that uses all nine. Tap the tiles or drag across them and a rope follows your finger from letter to letter; each word you find lands on a ticket in the list beside the wheel, and the nine-letter word gets a stamp. Everyday words count toward Good, Great and Every Word; rarer words still score, at half points. There is one wheel a day, the same for everybody until your own midnight, and every wheel is checked before it is dealt so it always has a nine-letter word and between 20 and 60 everyday words to find. Practice deals sets of five wheels.
