How to play

  1. Roll the dice, then tap a ringed checker and a lit point to move it by one die, or both dice.
  2. Doubles move four times. You must use both dice if you can.
  3. A single checker hit goes to the bar and must come back in first.
  4. With all fifteen in your home board, bear them off into the tray. First off wins.

Controls

Keyboard

  • Space rolls, picks up a checker and puts it down
  • ← → choose a checker, then where it goes
  • ↓ reaches the buttons and the chips under the board
  • Z undo, H hint, 2 doubles before a roll
  • P pause

Touch

  • Tap ROLL or anywhere on the board to roll
  • Tap a ringed checker, then a lit point; the tray on the right takes checkers borne off
  • Hint, Undo, Double and Resign sit under the board; the chips below change the opponent, level and cube

Controller

  • D-pad or left stick to move
  • A / Cross for action, B / Circle for secondary
  • Start to pause

Tips for a better score

  • A win against the machine banks 100 points on Gentle, 200 on Steady and 350 on Sharp, times the game's value: two for a gammon, three for a backgammon, and times the cube. A loss banks nothing and ends the run.
  • Two checkers on a point make it safe. Build points in a row in front of the other side's back checkers and they cannot get past.
  • The pip count in the middle of the board is how far each side still has to travel. When the checkers have passed each other it is a pure race, and the lower count is ahead.
  • Z takes back a checker you just moved. With nothing moved yet it goes back to the start of your last turn, with the same dice.

About Backgammon

Backgammon is the old race game of two dice and twenty-four points. Each side moves fifteen checkers round the board and home, and the first to bear all fifteen off wins. A lone checker can be hit and sent to the bar, and it has to come back in before anything else moves; two or more checkers on a point make it safe and block the other side. Every rule is in: doubles play four times, you must use both dice whenever any sequence of moves allows it, the higher die when only one can be played, and a checker bears off from a lower point only when none sits further back. Win before the other side bears any off for a gammon, worth double, or while they still have a checker on the bar or in your home for a backgammon, worth triple. Turn the doubling cube on to raise the stakes before a roll. Play the machine at Gentle, Steady or Sharp, or pass one phone between two people. Tap a checker and only the points it can legally reach light up.
