Tips for a better score
- A pin inside the country pays 1,000. Outside, it pays about 720 at 500 km, 510 at 1,000 km and 140 at 3,000 km, so a rough guess in the right corner of a continent still pays.
- On the whole-world map, small countries have a margin: under 25,000 km² a pin within 300 km counts as inside, under 100,000 km² within 200 km, under 300,000 km² within 100 km. The zoomed region maps allow 80 km and 40 km.
- Distance is measured to the nearest edge of the country, not its middle, so for a long country like Chile or Norway aim for the coast you know rather than the centre.
- Oceania on this map has only six independent countries, so an Oceania round also asks the island countries next door: Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, Timor-Leste and Brunei.
About Map Pin
Map Pin shows you the name of a country and a cream world map on a teal sea, and asks you to drop a pin where that country is. A pin inside the country scores a full thousand points; outside it, the score falls away with the real distance, measured along the curve of the Earth, from your pin to the nearest edge of the country. A mustard line draws from your pin to that edge and a small ticket shows how far off you were. Every round is ten places. The daily ten come from the whole world and are the same for everybody until midnight; practice lets you pick the world, Europe, Africa, Asia, the Americas or Oceania, each drawn zoomed in, and a level from well-known countries to obscure ones. Small countries are hard to hit on a whole-world map, so a pin close enough to one counts as inside it. The end of each round shows your score, how many pins landed within 500 km and your worst miss. Borders come from the public-domain Natural Earth map; disputed areas are drawn but never asked.
