Tips for a better score
- A win banks 100 points on Gentle, 250 on Steady and 500 on Sharp, plus 10 for every bead you still have. Each undo or hint in a game takes 10% off its win, down to half.
- While placing, don't rush a mill. Spread out over the points with four lines through them (the middles of the middle square) so your beads can still move later.
- The strongest shape is a double mill: two mills that share an open point, so one bead sliding back and forth closes a mill on every move.
- Against three flying beads, block their open lines before you chase your own mill: a flying side can close any gap you leave.
About Nine Men's Morris
Nine Men's Morris is one of the oldest board games still played: three nested squares joined at their middles, twenty-four points, nine beads a side. Take turns placing beads on empty points, then slide them one step along a line. Three of your beads in a straight line make a mill, and a mill takes one of your opponent's beads, though never one standing in a mill of its own unless every bead they have is in one. Once a side is down to three beads, those beads fly to any empty point. Leave your opponent with two beads, or with no move at all, and you win. A game is drawn when the same position comes up three times, after fifty moves each with no mill, or after ten moves each once both sides are down to three. Play the machine at Gentle, Steady or Sharp, or pass one device between two people. Wins bank points, and one lost game ends the run.
