Something not working in Chess?

How to play

  1. Tap a piece: dots show its quiet moves, rings show captures.
  2. Tap a square to move there, or drag the piece across.
  3. Leave the enemy king attacked with no legal move to win.
  4. The chips under the board set the level, your colour and two-up play.
  5. Tap Daily for today's mate in one, the same for everyone.

Controls

Keyboard

  • ← ↑ → ↓ move the cursor
  • Space picks up and puts down
  • Z takes back a move
  • C offers a draw or resigns
  • P to pause

Touch

  • Tap a piece to pick it up — small dots are quiet moves, rings are captures — then tap a square. Dragging the piece works just as well.
  • Tap the same piece again to put it down. The chips under the board change the level, your colour and the daily puzzle.

Controller

  • D-pad or left stick to move
  • A / Cross for action, B / Circle for secondary
  • Start to pause

Tips for a better score

  • A win banks 100 points on Gentle, 250 on Steady and 500 on Sharp. A draw pays about a quarter of that; a loss pays nothing and ends the run.
  • Z takes back your move and the machine's reply together, so one careless move need not decide the game. The pad's Undo button does the same thing.
  • Gentle looks only one move ahead and takes the second-best move about a third of the time, so it will drop pieces. Steady looks three moves ahead.
  • The daily puzzle is always mate in one and always has exactly one answer. Solving it banks 150 points and keeps your streak alive until tomorrow.

About Chess

Chess with the whole rulebook in place: castling both ways, en passant, promotion to any of four pieces, check, checkmate, stalemate, the fifty-move rule, threefold repetition and insufficient material. Play the machine at Gentle, Steady or Sharp, pick your colour, or pass the phone back and forth for two people on one board. The machine thinks in slices so the board never freezes, searches captures past its own horizon so it will not drop a queen, and tells you plainly how each game ended. A mate-in-one puzzle arrives every day, worked out fresh and proved to have exactly one answer. Points bank as you finish games: more for a win, fewer for a draw, none for a loss.
