How to play

  1. Roll the die as often as you like. Each roll adds to this turn’s pot.
  2. Roll a one and the pot is lost and your turn ends.
  3. Hold to bank the pot and pass the die.
  4. First to bank 100 wins. Beat the machine to face a sharper one.

Tips for a better score

  • Every roll risks the whole pot for an average gain of about three and a third. Past a pot of 20, a roll risks more than it earns on average, which is why the meter puts the line near there.
  • Behind in the race, push a little further; ahead, bank sooner. The line on the meter moves with the score for exactly that reason.
  • Once either side reaches 71, the sharp play is to keep rolling until you can win on this turn: the other player will probably finish next time.
  • A won match pays your banked points, twice the machine’s shortfall below 100, and 50 for each match number. A lost match pays your banked points and ends the run. Two-player games bank no score.

About Pig

Pig is the old push-your-luck dice game. On your turn you roll one die as many times as you like, and every roll adds its number to the pot. Roll a one and the pot is gone and the die passes. Hold instead and the pot is banked for good. First to bank 100 wins. Play the machine, which gets braver and cleverer with every match you win until one lost match ends your run, or play a friend on the same keyboard or phone, taking turns. A risk meter under the table shows what you stand to lose and where a sensible player would stop, and when the machine is rolling it shows exactly where the machine will stop.
