Tips for a better score

  • An open three, three in a row with both ends empty, demands an answer. Build one while also making a four elsewhere and the machine cannot block both.
  • A round win pays 200, plus 10 for every stone under 30 you used, plus 100 for each straight win before it, so finish quickly.
  • Undo takes back your last stone and the machine’s reply for 50 points. If your score can’t cover it yet, the cost comes off your next round win.
  • On a phone the first tap only previews a stone; tap the same point again to place it. Turn Tap twice off on the start screen for single taps.

About Five Stones

Five Stones is the traditional five-in-a-row game, also known as gomoku, played on a 13-by-13 grid of points. Players take turns placing a stone on any empty point, and the first unbroken line of five or more across, down or diagonally wins. Play the machine, which always takes a winning point, always blocks your four, and gets sharper every round you win, or pass one screen between two players. Against the machine a win pays more the fewer stones you used, a full board keeps the run alive, and one lost round ends it.
