Team Picker

Paste the names, pick the teams, shuffle. Fair every time.

About Team Picker

Type or paste up to 60 names, choose a number of teams or people per team, and shuffle them into even teams with fun names. Pick one person at random, copy the teams as plain text, and find your list saved for next time.

A random team generator for classrooms, offices and game nights. Names are mixed with a fair Fisher–Yates shuffle, using your browser's secure random numbers where available, then dealt round the teams one at a time, so team sizes never differ by more than one.

Paste a column straight from a spreadsheet: new lines, commas and tabs all separate names. Each team gets its own colour and a silly name.

Ways to use it

  • Split a class into four even groups for a science project in about ten seconds.
  • Pick a random student to answer next and watch the highlighter land on one name.
  • Shuffle a work trivia night into fresh teams, each with its own silly team name.
  • Choose sides for backyard cricket or a park kickabout without anyone being picked last.

Questions

Is the team picker really random?

Yes. It uses a Fisher–Yates shuffle with your browser's secure random numbers where available, so every order of the names is equally likely before they're dealt into teams.

What happens if the names don't divide evenly?

Names are dealt round the teams one at a time, so the spare people go to the first teams and no team is ever more than one person bigger than another.

Does it save my class list?

Yes. Your names, how you split them and the number are saved in this browser on this device, ready for next time. The list isn't sent anywhere.
